Fit & Layering Guide

Length / Fit / Layering

A useful outer layer starts with a comparison. Before choosing a letter size, take a jacket or cardigan you already like, lay it flat and measure it. Use a similar style: a fitted knit and a roomy coat need different amounts of space.

01 / Measure the piece you own

Chest: Fasten the garment without stretching it. Measure from underarm to underarm and double that number for the chest circumference. If a chart says “chest width,” it is a flat width rather than a circumference; compare like with like.

Shoulders: Measure across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam. A dropped shoulder deliberately extends beyond your natural shoulder, so a larger number alone does not mean the garment is the wrong size.

Sleeves: Measure from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Raglan sleeves may use a different starting point, so look for a note in the product chart. Compare only measurements taken from the same points.

Length: Measure from the high shoulder point to the hem. Hold a tape against yourself to see where that length lands, then sit down and check whether that hem position suits your plans.

02 / Leave space for the inner layer

A tee uses less space than a chunky sweater. Compare your reference garment while wearing the kind of inner layer you expect to use. You should be able to move your arms forward and fasten the front without pulling. Do not size down just to match a familiar letter.

A compact cropped jacket is easiest over a thin base. For a thicker knit, look at our loose bombers, shirt jackets and fuller coats, then check their chest and shoulder measurements. A one-size item has one set of measurements; it is not intended to fit every body.

03 / Choose the outer line

Short: A cropped hem emphasizes the waistline and works with high-rise trousers. Compare front and back lengths where given.

Mid-length: A shirt jacket or shorter trench can finish below a blouse without extending as far as a long coat. Check its length against your longest regular inner layer.

Long: An over-knee coat makes a clear line over dresses and wider pants. Consider stride, seating and how the front opens before deciding on length.

04 / Read the individual chart

Product measurements are shown in inches and converted from the source measurements. Small variations of about 0.8–1.2 inches can occur with manual measuring. Knit measurements are taken without stretching unless stated otherwise. These are garment dimensions, not body-size recommendations, and labeled sizes vary between styles.
